New Year is the most valuable holiday in Russian people mind. It is very significant for MNO to attract as more Subscribers as possible during this timeframe. In this year Beeline is concentrated on dealing with the crisis and gaining synergy from previous merge with Golden Telecom. I think that's why there is no aggressive advertising of Beeline now - budgets are cut. Many projects are postponed until better days and money are being collected for credit payments in the beginning of 2009. Even more, I heard rumors that all payments are frozen now there. So, lets switch to other MNOs :-)
I spent some time on watching "New Year Tariff" movie. I strongly believe that it is one of the most effective product placement I've ever seen. Mobile communications are strongly tied into story line. You may see MTS only twice during all movie: at the early beginning and at the end. MTS office manager is a wizard presenting love to everyone who comes and buys New Year tariff. Magic love story happens with guy whou bought New Year tariff - he gets connected to a girl from different time (one year ago). He sends her MMS, makes video calls and of course talks to her... MTS makes it true - real lovely mobile communications. At it works!
MTS brings redundant communications (even between different times), love, magic. I think this movie could be the real New Year theme for future holidays every time raising MTS popularity. I would recommend such steps to almost all MNOs all over the world. It is a good experience from Russia with love and friendship.

I heard other rumours that MTS has cut their budgets for the next year 2009 for about 50-70%. And Beeline is still doing OK.
I definitely have to check out this movie by MTS. But, based on your description, I can say in advance that such script (scenario) was already used by Hollywood movie called "Lakehouse". Have you seen it?
Talking about product placement movies - try to recall last year's "Ironya Sudby 2" - lots of Beeline PPs as well as Toyota's and others :)

Beeline has frozen all payments until the end of 1Q of 2009 (I know this 100% sure), 10% jobs cut (already), many projects are going very slow because of lack of financing. Beeline has to pay former Golden Telecom debt in 1Q.
About MTS I know that there is going to make 15% jobs cut. Most of projects are going ok, new projects are being initiated. We will see it in January and February. Additionally, AFK Sistema succeeded in refinancing its debts (they gained government help).
I looked at Lakehouse trailer. Yes. It looks similiar script with some differences of course - instead of mailbox we have tariff New Year from MTS :-) I'll try to find Lakehouse - I liked it's trailer. Thank you for your feedback.

sounds a bit pessimistic and not very promising :) We started one project with MTS a couple of months ago, just before the crisis, and it was frozen for undefined period of time. Maybe, everything depends on class of project/product?
Please let me know what you think about Lakehouse - in my opinion - one of the underrated movies.
Yes. Not very optimistic :-) but true :-) Especially, I was interested in Mobile Advertising - Shamolin said they are very interested in this direction but my inside tells me that it is one of the lowest priorities (but tender should be started in 1Q 2009).
The Lakehouse is very impresiive movie. I liked it very much - much better than New Year tariff - mainly because I like Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves is very good actor. Of course story line is very strong.
